Primary Threats & Human Impact

Humans are greatly destroying the rainforest for lumber and for farmland. This destruction of the ecosystem causes disruption in the balance of organisms. We need to save the rainforest!

  • Deforestation for Agriculture: Large swaths of forest are cleared for cattle ranching and commercial crops like soy and palm oil.
    • Effect: This leads to massive habitat fragmentation, isolating wildlife populations and making it harder for them to find food or mates.
  • Logging: Trees are harvested for timber (like mahogany or teak) and paper products.
    • Effect: Beyond the loss of the trees themselves, logging requires road construction into deep jungle, which provides easy access for illegal hunters and further settlement.
  • Climate Change: Global temperature rises alter the specific rainfall patterns these forests rely on.
    • Effect: Some areas are experiencing severe droughts, making the normally damp rainforest susceptible to catastrophic wildfires that the ecosystem is not adapted to survive.
  • Mining: Operations for gold, copper, and aluminum often involve clearing land and using toxic chemicals like mercury.
    • Effect: This results in water pollution that poisons rivers and the fish populations that both animals and indigenous human communities rely on.
  • Poaching and the Illegal Wildlife Trade: High demand for exotic pets, skins, and traditional medicines leads to the removal of key species.

Effect: The loss of “ecosystem engineers” (like elephants or primates that spread seeds) disrupts the natural regeneration of the forest seeds.
